More Than Just A Sport

By: Caitlin H., Arizona

How did I manage to get completely hooked on the small-world aquatic sport called synchronized swimming? Well, it began when the summer camp tennis class was full. But there were a few spots open in the synchronized swimming class – what did I have to lose? At 9 years old, I had no idea what an impact synchronized swimming would have on my life.

Synchro quickly became a sport my sister and I enjoyed together. We became wildly competitive and enjoyed many years of competing in the Arizona sun. Synchronized swimming is where beauty, grace, and fierce athleticism combine to become something uniquely magical. What started as a recreational sport became an all-consuming plan for next year’s routines. Before I knew it, I was a senior in high school pursuing opportunities to swim in college. After visiting campus, meeting the team, and watching my first Michigan football game, I committed to swim at the most wonderful place; The Ohio State University.

One element drew me in more than anything – to swim at The Ohio State University would mean swimming for an organization that had represented so many elite athletes long before I arrived; it would be a true honor. The thing is, synchronized swimming is a team sport - and you are only as strong as the bond your team has. Over the course of my four years spent at The Ohio State University, I learned what it means to be a teammate, a leader, and to be a part of something bigger than yourself. If I could go back in time, I would – not to change anything, but to live it all over again.
